THE 2013 ELLAK INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
“Micro versus Macro Literatures in English:
Aesthetics, Politics, and Ethics of Distant Reading in Literatures, Cultures, Languages, and the Humanities”

Sookmyung Women's University, Seoul, Korea
November 7-9, 2013

For the details of the conference schedule and program, please refer to the website: http://www.ellak.or.kr

Conference Theme:
Literary globalization and “distance” have become hot critical issues in the fields of comparative and world literature as well as that of cultural studies, creating the problematics of border-crossing and convergence. The issue of “distant reading” has been levying challenges against the hermeneutic authority of “close reading,” and in so doing, has created a new space for macro literatures which necessitates a new configuration through geographic representation.
Under the title of “Micro versus Macro Literatures in English: Aesthetics, Politics, and Ethics of Distant Reading in Literatures, Cultures, Languages, and the Humanities,” the 2013 ELLAK International Conference will provide an open forum for scholars from all over the world. Moreover, this conference aims to foster ongoing dialogue regarding global exchanges and contestations in the fields of English language and literature and the humanities at large. We invite submissions that grapple with the tension between macro µ literatures, from the aesthetic, political, and ethical perspectives of both close reading and distant reading.

Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:
For Special Sessions,
1. “Close Reading and the Literary Space: The Poetics and Ethics of Reading in Literatures”
